he aha te kaupapa?

About Te Hapori Matihiko

Te Hapori Maihiko is a community for Māori working (or aspiring to work) in digital and tech roles. Prior to building this kaupapa, we surveyed Māori working in digital to understand their needs. We also looked overseas at other indigenous kaupapa for digital and tech. This is by Māori, for Māori, of Māori.

We have regular matauranga sessions with leaders in our hapori, opportunities to contribute digital skills back to your rohe and the Matihiko Awards. The Matihiko Awards will recognise excellent Māori contribution across a range of digital and tech kaupapa. The celebration and visibility of this success is an important step in creating leadership pathways for our rangatahi.

Through this mahi, our kaupapa hopes to support an increase in Māori representation and participation in the digitech sector, both in Aotearoa and abroad.

E kore te puna mihi ki a Hīkina Whakatutuki (MBIE) e mimiti, mei kore i a koutou i tā koutou pūtea tautoko hoki e kore tēnei kaupapa i rokohanga ai.

We extend deep gratitude to the team at MBIE for the funding to get this kaupapa started.

Our mission is to empower and celebrate Māori in digitech.

Through our research, we found the following:

- Māori felt alone and unsupported in their mahi
- Māori are often expected to be the Māori person for their organisation but didn't have anyone to tautoko them
- There weren't clear leaders and leadership pathways for pakeke and rangatahi in digitech
- Small business operators felt isolated & wanted to make connections
- There wasn't a way to provide nationwide or even global recognition for mahi
- People wanted to offer skills back to their rohe but weren't sure how.

An inclusive kaupapa for Māori working in te ao matihiko.

What is digital and tech?

When we considered creating a community, we didn’t want to replicate anything that already existed. We wanted to make sure that there was a place for all the different digital disciplines, and ensure that there was space for collaboration.

If you are Māori and work in te ao matihiko / online / the digital world, this is for you.

- Māori working in digital and tech
- Business owners Practitioners
- Those aspiring to tech careers
- Business wanting to support their Māori staff

What does digital mean?

- Work online or with technology in any way
- Work for a tech or digital company
- Working in digital / tech design
- Digital communications / marketing
- Have an interest in the digital or tech space

We partner with:

- Tech industry groups
- Technology companies
- Government (MBIE, MoE, TPK, MSD)
- Those with an interest in Māori success in digital spaces

Our values guide us:

Whakanui: we recognise each person’s whakapapa, their identity, mahi and their contributions to the digital space, locally and globally.

Whakamana: advocate, encourage and tautoko our hapori.

Aroha: we operate in a space of deep love for our people, our mahi and our whenua.

Manaakitanga: we welcome people in, both in real life and online. We want our people to have a place of belonging and a hapori to connect with.

Kaitiakitanga: we are committed in our role of caretakers of the whenua and taiao.
